Usher acceptance speech at BET awards

BET Awards Apologizes for Muting Portions of Usher's Acceptance Speech

July 02nd 12:33

Los Angeles, CA - The BET Awards, recognized for honoring Black excellence in music, entertainment, and sports, became the center of a controversy after the network opted to censor parts of Usher's acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award. Usher, a revered musical icon with a career spanning decades, delivered a passionate speech on Sunday, June 30th. However, eagle-eyed viewers at home noticed that significant portions of the 13-minute speech were omitted due to the presence of profanity.

Following this incident, BET released a statement expressing regret for the censored segments, attributing the action to technical issues. The statement reads, "Due to an audio malfunction during the LIVE telecast, portions of his speech were inadvertently muted. We extend our sincere apologies to Usher as we couldn't be more grateful for his participation in Culture's Biggest Night."

Although the televised broadcast left out certain segments, attendees reported that Usher addressed his use of curse words within the speech itself, stating, "I'm sorry I'm cursing, I just want to tell you all how I really feel." He then proceeded to discuss overcoming challenges in the industry, using more forceful language to illustrate the obstacles he had encountered.

The event also included a star-studded tribute to Usher, featuring artists like Childish Gambino performing a rendition of his early hit "U Don't Have to Call." Additionally, a group of talented female singers, including Keke Palmer, Summer Walker, and Chloe Bailey, put forth a medley of Usher's greatest hits.

Despite the disruptions to his speech, the night unequivocally belonged to Usher. Fresh from a triumphant Las Vegas residency and a memorable Super Bowl performance, the singer was showered with admiration from both his peers and fans alike.
