Trial Postponed For Duane Davis Tupac Shakur’s Alleged Killer

February 20, 2024

The trial for a former Los Angeles-area gang leader accused of the murder of hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur in 1996 has been postponed from June to November. The defendant, Duane "Keffe D" Davis, expressed his anticipation of securing bail soon and transitioning to house arrest with electronic monitoring.

During a hearing at Clark County District Court, Davis, 60, voiced concerns about finding individuals willing to assist him in posting the $750,000 bail due to fears of media attention and public scrutiny. Originally from Compton, California, Davis is the lone surviving occupant of the vehicle involved in the fatal shooting of Shakur and the injury of rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight in Las Vegas.

Acknowledging the challenges of media scrutiny, Davis's new attorney, Carl Arnold, highlighted ongoing evidence exchanges between the defense and prosecution. Initially scheduled for June 3, the trial has now been rescheduled for November 4.

Arnold expressed optimism about Davis's prospects of meeting the bail requirements and potentially transitioning to house arrest in the coming week. He emphasized the absence of a murder weapon or conclusive evidence linking Davis to the crime scene, indicating that the burden of proof rests heavily on the prosecution.

Prosecutors contend that Davis incriminated himself in various interviews and a memoir published in 2019. Davis claimed he was promised immunity in 2010 after cooperating with authorities in Los Angeles regarding the shootings of Shakur and rival rapper Christopher Wallace, also known as Biggie Smalls, six months later in Los Angeles.

Tupac Shakur, with five No. 1 albums and posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, remains an iconic figure in hip-hop culture. His murder case continues to captivate public interest and legal scrutiny decades after his untimely death.
