The American Museum of Natural History is elevating its gem and mineral collection with an exclusive new exhibition titled "Ice Cold." This showcase isn't your run-of-the-mill diamonds or rubies. Instead, "Ice Cold" unveils custom-designed jewelry from some of hip-hop's most prominent figures, glistening alongside natural gems in the prestigious Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls.
Vikki Tobak, a distinguished guest curator for the exhibit, underscores the profound connection between hip-hop jewelry and the artistry of jewelry-making throughout history. She illuminates this connection by presenting the meticulously crafted pieces within the rich context of the world history of gems and minerals, inviting a deeper appreciation for their historical significance.
The exhibition is more than just a display of flashy diamonds and gold chains; it goes beyond that. Roxanne Shante, a legendary rapper, lent a Juice Crew ring to the exhibit, which she believes has a deeper meaning. According to her, "People would look for people with a juice ring, and you knew that was a person you could trust." This ring's role as a symbol of unity and loyalty within the early hip-hop scene is highly emphasized.
Museum president Sean Decatur envisions the exhibit as a gateway to a broader cultural dialogue. He asserts, "Each object in the museum can be a pathway to a much bigger cultural conversation." In the case of "Ice Cold," it ignites a discourse about the transformative journey of hip-hop since its inception in the 1970s, inviting visitors to be part of this cultural narrative.
The exhibit features an array of pieces reflecting hip-hop's ever-changing styles. It includes works from DJ Kool Herc, the genre's founding father, a necklace from the Notorious B.I.G., and an eagle bracelet from Ghostface Killah. Recent trends are represented by Nicki Minaj's Barbie pendant, Bad Bunny's grill set, and a playful Lego pendant designed for A$AP Rocky.
Pete Nice, an advisory board member for the exhibition and curator at the Bronx's Hip Hop Museum, believes that the exhibit showcases the cyclical nature of hip-hop jewelry. "There have been cycles within hip-hop within the style of jewelry and adornment, and this kinda catches the progression of it all," Nice said.
