Soulja Boy is addressing internet rumors after calling out claims about a lack of attendance tied to his upcoming Rapper University. The rapper also suggested the backlash is connected to his role clearing a Beyoncé and Jay-Z song remix.
In his remarks, Soulja Boy pointed to the “Morning Dew (Donk)” remix and said he cleared the track, which includes samples he highlighted from Sheck Wes’ “Mo Bamba” and The Isley Brothers’ “Between The Sheets” (which he described as the “Big Poppa” sample from Biggie Smalls). Soulja Boy said the new track also samples his 2007 song “Donk,” and he connected that clearance to social media posts he believes are false.
According to Soulja Boy, the rumors started after he cleared work involving Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Speaking on social media, as captured by Livebitez on Instagram, he said, “I cleared a song for Beyoncé, the 'Donk' remix with Jay-Z.”
He then criticized what he described as fake news circulating after that clearance, saying, “Today I wake up, motherf***ers is posting fake news about me... Talking about 'Nobody shows up to Rapper University.' I ain't even did Rapper University yet. It ain't even started yet. They posted a video of me looking at a venue for the live, in-person auditions.”
Soulja Boy added more emphasis on the timing and what he believes is the connection between the Beyoncé and Jay-Z clearance and the posts he saw, saying, “Jay-Z, this what you and Beyoncé be going through, gang? What the fk? This na clear a song for Beyoncé and Jay-Z, [and] the next day, these people posting fake news about me? No! No. I am not Beyoncé. I'm not Jay-Z. I'm not just gon' sit back and let y'all say anything. I'ma get on the Internet and I'ma say something immediately. Stop f**ing playing on my name.”
Soulja Boy said Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s “Morning Dew (Donk)” remix includes a Sheck Wes “Mo Bamba” sample and The Isley Brothers’ “Between The Sheets,” which he referred to as the “Big Poppa” sample from Biggie Smalls. He also stated the track samples his 2007 song “Donk.”
He has also dealt with issues connected to Streamer University, which he said led him to launch the Rapper University effort. At the same time, he claimed internet rumors about attendance for Rapper University were fake news.
Based on Soulja Boy’s statements in the cited social post, he denies Rapper University has started yet and says he will continue responding on the internet to what he calls misinformation.
