Tupac estate threatens to sue drake over diss track

Tupac's Estate Threatens To Sue Drake Over Diss Track

April 24th 13:38

There is an ongoing feud between rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar, which has been marked by a series of diss tracks. In the latest development, Tupac Shakur's estate has accused Drake of misusing Tupac's likeness through the use of AI-generated vocals on his diss track "Taylor Made Freestyle." Tupac's estate denies authorizing the use of his voice or likeness on the track.

The estate has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Drake, demanding that he remove the song within 24 hours, threatening legal action if he fails to comply. The legal argument hinges on Tupac's publicity rights, which grant control over how his image and likeness are used commercially. The estate argues that Drake's unauthorized use of AI-generated Tupac vocals, a technology that can replicate a person's voice with high accuracy, violates these rights and tarnishes Tupac's legacy.

This case not only exposes the growing legal uncertainty surrounding the use of AI voice cloning technology but also has the potential to set a precedent for how artists' estates handle the unauthorized use of AI-generated likenesses. The letter also suggests that the AI model used to create the Tupac vocals might have infringed on copyrights held by Tupac's record label, further complicating the matter.

Drake's representatives have yet to comment publicly on the cease-and-desist letter. This case is sure to be closely watched by the music industry and those grappling with the legal implications of AI technology. Legal experts speculate that the outcome could have far-reaching implications for the use of AI-generated content in the music industry, potentially leading to stricter regulations or new standards for obtaining rights to use such content.
